As DDR4 availability becomes less predictable, secondary supply is gaining importance for companies that still need to support installed systems built around mature memory components.
At Reconext Penang, we are strengthening that supply path through new automation in our memory harvesting and BGA refurbishment operation. The latest upgrades are designed to improve inspection speed, increase consistency, and support higher-volume recovery of qualified memory devices.
AI-Based OCR Improves Memory Chip Verification
We have deployed new OCR stations to verify chip markings and confirm device orientation in trays. Powered by our latest AI-based OCR technology, the stations improve recognition accuracy on worn or difficult markings often found on recovered components.
The impact on throughput is substantial. Inspection time for a tray of 170 chips has been reduced from more than two minutes to about 30 seconds.
Automated Optical Inspection Strengthens BGA Quality Control
We are also preparing for the next stage of automation with the rollout of automated optical inspection stations for BGA quality assessment. The first four AOI stations are scheduled to ship to Penang in the second half of June.
The AOI systems will inspect solder ball quality and the underside of BGA devices for contamination and deviations from SMT quality standards. By applying automated inspection to this step, we aim to make BGA quality assessment more objective and repeatable at scale.
Supporting a More Reliable Secondary Memory Supply
These upgrades build on our broader secondary memory supply strategy. As demand continues for DDR4 and other mature components, the ability to recover memory devices with speed and consistency is becoming a more important part of supply-chain resilience.
For customers, the result is a stronger recovery process behind qualified secondary supply. Our investments in AI-based OCR and AOI at Penang are intended to help convert recovered components into dependable inventory for long-life products and installed systems.
